Craniofacial tissue engineering
Rebuilding the bones and soft tissue of the face and jaw, where function and appearance are inseparable.
Craniofacial reconstruction addresses defects of the skull, face, and jaw arising from trauma, tumour resection, or congenital conditions. It sits at an unusual intersection: the tissue is load-bearing and anatomically intricate, and the result is on the patient's face, so functional and aesthetic requirements cannot be separated.
The biology is distinctive too. Much craniofacial bone forms through intramembranous ossification, and its cells derive embryologically from neural crest rather than mesoderm — meaning conclusions drawn from long bones do not transfer automatically. Dental pulp stem cells, themselves neural-crest-derived, are studied here as a multifaceted tool for regenerating craniofacial tissues.
Practically, the approaches overlap heavily with orthopedic reconstruction of critical-size defects: patient-specific printed scaffolds are especially attractive where anatomy must match precisely, combined with osteoinductive signals and grafting techniques.
