Bioactive glass and calcium silicate materials

Materials that do not merely fill a space but chemically provoke a biological response.

Bioactive glasses are silicate-based materials that react with body fluid rather than sitting inertly within it. On contact they exchange ions and form a surface layer of hydroxycarbonate apatite chemically similar to bone mineral, to which tissue bonds directly. The ions released — silicon and calcium among them — also influence nearby cells, which is what makes the material "bioactive" rather than merely biocompatible.

In dentistry, calcium silicate-based materials and bioactive glasses have shown promising results in pulp regeneration and restorative dentin formation. They appear to encourage progenitors toward odontoblast-like behaviour, forming reparative dentin — a material acting as a signal, not just a filler.

The same logic operates in bone, where these materials sit alongside calcium phosphate ceramics in the scaffold toolkit. Matching the dissolution rate to the pace of tissue formation remains the recurring difficulty.
