Decellularized matrices

Stripping the cells from real tissue and keeping the scaffold nature already built.

Rather than fabricating a scaffold, decellularization takes existing tissue and removes its cells with detergents, enzymes, or physical methods, leaving the extracellular matrix intact. The result retains an architecture no manufacturing process can currently match — including, in whole organs, the vascular tree itself, which is a direct answer to the diffusion limit.

The retained matrix also keeps much of its biological signalling: bound growth factors, native adhesion sites, tissue-appropriate mechanics. Decellularized products are established clinically in several soft-tissue applications, and processed allograft bone is arguably the same idea applied to the skeleton.

The tension is inherent. Decellularize gently and residual cellular material risks an immune reaction; decellularize aggressively and the matrix that made it worthwhile is damaged. Recellularizing the construct afterward — getting cells to repopulate it evenly — remains largely unsolved.
